What are the causes of bad breath and how to get rid of it?

Bad breath is a very common disorder that usually occurs as an indicator of another disease. The disease, called "halitosis" in medical terms, is characterized by the presence of an odor that emanates from the person's mouth and disturbs both the person and those around them. The disease can also cause social problems as it can cause the person to isolate themselves from society. Although parents of children with this problem anxiously search for the answer to the question "what causes bad breath in children?", this situation is usually normal and can be easily eliminated when effective oral hygiene is provided.

What Causes Bad Breath?

A slight bad breath that is felt only in the morning is generally considered normal and is not associated with any disease. The answer to the question "what causes bad breath in the morning?" can be given as the decrease in the amount of production and flow rate of saliva during sleep and the number of bacteria in the mouth that cause bad breath increases. This condition, which does not require treatment, is usually not pathological. However, not every bad breath is so innocent. Most of the time, the causes of bad breath are the presence of other diseases.

Before answering the question "what is good for bad breath?", it should be determined why bad breath occurs. Bad breath occurs due to a pathological condition on the back of the tongue or other oral tissues. Protein-containing food residues are broken down by bacteria into sulfur compounds. The accumulation of these compounds on the tongue leads to the continuation of bad breath. Other factors that cause bad breath are:

  • Inadequate oral hygiene,

  • Incorrect and incompatible restoration treatment,

  • Tooth decay,

  • Sores and ulcers in the oral mucosa,

  • Dry mouth,

  • Prosthetics that are not cleaned well,

  • Tongue rust,

  • Pharyngitis,

  • Diabetes,

  • Liver failure.
