Hur fungerar WhatsApp?
Det finns en teknisk video på YouTube av WhatsApp-programutvecklaren Rick Reed om programvaruinfrastrukturen för WhatsApp. I grundläggande logik är WhatsApp en chattmjukvara där du kan kommunicera med krypterade anslutningar i skriftlig, ljud- och videoform i form av person-till-person, person-till-multiple-person eller gruppchatt. När WhatsApp först installeras på enheten matchar det personens telefonnummer och WhatsApp-konto så att varje nummer registreras i systemet som en användare. Eftersom telefonnummer är unika över hela världen krävs inget extra lösenordsskydd under registreringsfasen.
Kontoverifieringsprocessen utförs med ett SMS som skickas till den telefonen. När din enhet kommunicerar med WhatsApp-servrar för första gången skapas en token (säkerhetstoken) unik för ditt telefonnummer med SMS-verifieringskoden du får. Programmet använder ett anpassat XMPP-protokoll i sin infrastruktur. Detta protokoll användes även tidigare av program som ICQ, AIM, Yahoo Chat och Google Talk. För att automatiskt lägga till kontakter till användarens WhatsApp-kontaktlista, hämtar WhatsApp automatiskt alla telefonnummer från enhetens adressbok och jämför dem med den centrala WhatsApp-användardatabasen. På så sätt kan WhatsApp-kontakter med sparade telefonnummer kontaktas.
